Debts and loans by person

Debts in Walletable are attached to a person, not buried in a category called "lent". The Debts tab opens on two totals — what you are owed and what you owe — with a line per person underneath, in whatever currencies the debts are in.

What a debt actually is here

Lending money is an expense: the money left your wallet. Walletable records that expense and, at the same time, remembers who has it.

That is why a debt is not a separate ledger. It is a normal transaction with a person attached, which is also why a repayment shows up as income and your balance ends up right without any manual correction.

How to record a debt

  1. Open the Debts tab and tap the add button in the top right.
  2. Choose I lent or I borrowed. The hint under each says which way the money moves.
  3. Pick the wallet: where to take the money from if you lent, where to deposit it if you borrowed.
  4. Enter the amount, and pick the person. New people can be typed in by name or imported from your Contacts.
  5. Save. The person appears on the Debts tab under What I'm owed or What I owe.

When the money comes back

Tap a person on the Debts tab and the actions for their debt open: They repaid, Remind me in a week, Send a reminder, and Forgive.

A repayment asks for the wallet the money goes into and the amount received. If the repayment comes in a different currency than the loan, the amounts are kept separately — the same way as a transfer with conversion — so a loan of euros repaid in dinars does not quietly change the size of the debt.

Reminders you send yourself

Walletable never messages anyone on your behalf. Send a reminder writes the text for you — gentle, as a list, or amount only — and you send it from your own messenger, or copy it. Remind me in a week sets a notification for you, not for them.

Forgiving a debt

Forgive closes a debt without a repayment. Three things happen, and the app says so before you confirm: the amount becomes 0 and the person leaves the list, the original spending stays spending because the money really is gone, and history keeps a "forgiven" mark so your repayment statistics stay honest. Forgiving can be undone.

How to mark a repayment

  1. On the Debts tab, tap the person and choose They repaid — or I repaid, for a debt of your own.
  2. If that person has more than one open debt and the wallet does not settle which, the app asks which debt is being repaid.
  3. Pick the wallet: Where to deposit for money coming back to you, Where to take from when you are the one paying.
  4. Enter the amount received. If its currency differs from the debt's, a Conversion block appears and both amounts are kept.
  5. Tap Record. The repayment lands as an income, and the person's line shrinks by what came back.

How to forgive a debt

  1. On the Debts tab, tap the person and choose Forgive — or It was forgiven, for a debt of your own.
  2. Read the three consequences the app lists: the debt closes, the original spending stays spending, and this is not counted as a repayment.
  3. Confirm. The amount becomes 0 and the person leaves the list, with a "forgiven" mark left in history.
  4. Changed your mind? Open the person again and choose Undo forgiving — the debt comes back as it was.

Questions

Can one person owe me in two currencies at once?

Yes. Debts are kept per currency, and a person's line shows each amount separately. Nothing is merged into one number behind your back.

We split a bill — how do I record that?

Record the full amount you paid as an expense, then add one debt per person, each for that person's share — a debt holds one name, so three friends means three debts. Each share stays attached to its own name, so you can see who has settled up and who has not, and mark repayments one at a time.

Do debts count as my money?

Money you lent is already out of your wallet, so it is not in your balance. What you are owed is shown as its own total on the Debts tab, deliberately apart from your wallets.

Does a person need the app for this?

No. People in Walletable are just names in your own list. Sharing a wallet is a different feature — see shared wallets.

Is there another way to create a debt?

Yes, straight from the wallet: tap − on it, enter the amount, and instead of a category tap the Lent tile — the list of people opens. Starting with + the same tile reads Borrowed. Steps are in recording a transaction.
