Expenses from bank SMS

Where a bank has no integration, it still sends a text message for every card payment. Walletable reads those messages and creates the expenses from them — on your iPhone, through Apple Shortcuts. The message text is never sent anywhere.

How it works, in one paragraph

A Shortcuts automation fires when a message arrives from your bank, and hands the text to Walletable's Parse bank message action. The app pulls out the amount, the currency and the merchant, and writes an expense to the wallet you chose. Nothing about this leaves your phone: the app receives the text, takes the numbers out of it, and that is the end of it.

How to set it up

  1. In Walletable, open Settings → SMS parsing and read the steps there — the same ones are below.
  2. Open Shortcuts → Automation → Message.
  3. Set the sender: your bank's number or name, exactly as it appears in Messages.
  4. Add the Parse bank message action and pick the wallet the expenses should go to.
  5. Turn on Run Immediately, so you are not asked to confirm every message.

Teaching the parser

General rules catch the obvious cases, but every bank writes its messages its own way, so Walletable learns yours. In Settings → SMS parsing, tap Teach the parser and paste two different messages of the same kind — two purchases, say, from different shops and for different amounts.

Two are needed because one message cannot show what varies. Whatever matches in both becomes the fixed part of the template, and what differs becomes the fields: amount, currency, name, card, date. The app shows what it found so you can correct any field before saving, and asks which wallet the template writes to.

Confirmation, and why some messages wait

A template with a wallet creates expenses on its own. Anything else goes into a confirmation list inside the app instead, and Walletable tells you about it rather than guessing. That is deliberate: an expense created from a message the app did not really understand is worse than one you add yourself.

Settings → SMS parsing also has Check, where you can paste any message and see exactly what comes out of it — which template matched, what amount was found, and whether a message like it would be created automatically or sent to confirmation.

Questions

Does Walletable read all my messages?

No. It only ever receives the one message your automation hands it, and only from the sender you named. Why that is, in detail.

Are my messages sent to a server?

No — parsing runs on the iPhone itself.

Which banks are supported?

All of them, because you teach the parser yourself. There is no list to be on.

Can one automation serve two cards or two wallets?

Yes. Make a separate automation per sender, or several templates for the same sender: each template remembers its own wallet, and the template that matches decides where the expense goes.

The amount came out wrong. What do I fix?

Open Settings → SMS parsing → Templates, pick the template and tap the field that is wrong. The correction applies to every following message of that kind.

Can income be created this way too?

Yes. A template is marked as an expense or an income when you teach it, so deposits and salary messages can be created the same way.
